World Cup 2011

April 2, 2011.
India emerged a world champion in the Cricket World Cup after a long lull. People had waited for this day with baited breath. They had dreamed of this day, ask not how many times and with what intensity. And now when India has at last emerged a global champion, the joy of Indians knows no bounds. No sooner did the Indian captain hit the much needed six, fire crackers went into the skies in dizzying heights. The Indian skies were filled with colorful sparks of the winning sensation. The jubilation and sheer euphoria which has drugged the midnight air is ecstatic. There is a deep sense of satisfaction and content in everyone, and a deep sense of respect and love towards the boys in blue. Cricket in India has never been just a game. It has been a way of life - a religion. For some, it is the purpose of life. Cricketers here have temples built in their names. They are worshiped as Gods.
I as an individual have never been fascinated by cricket. I seldom watch matches. All this World Cup series, willy-nilly, I have been meticulously kept updated with the results and star performances of cricketers, thanks to the hoards and hoards of status updates on Facebook..! I got to know that India won by the same means.! And then, something happened.
I did not really feel the euphoria when I first got to know that my country had bagged the World Cup 2011. Sooner though, there was an ambush of chat messages sent across saying, "WE WON..!!! HURRAY..!! PARTY TIME..!!" People on my friends list with whom I have only a nodding acquaintance too, celebrated "our" victory with me...It was as if the invisible barrier which existed/exists between all of us was suddenly broken off by a mighty force, only to unite us in harmony. The curtain of enigma was raised.
I realized that Cricket is not just a game in India. It is a passion. It is a driving force of national integration. It is a bond of friendship. It is a tie which ties every single Indian together, be him a Hindu or a Muslim or a Christian. Cricket is a feeling which brings people together; which reminds us, time and again, that Yes..!! We are One..! We are Comrades..! We are Indians..!
No governmental policy or scheme has been able to match the quality of Cricket in terms of achieving national integration as much as Cricket has achieved. Fire crackers do not seem to stop bursting all this night..! The wind seems to have boozed..!
Tonight, I went on to watch the final moments of celebration of the Indian team at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. How they were rejoicing at their success, without having an iota of idea about how massively are they contributing towards bringing their comrades together..!! And how artistically they are weaving the strong Indian web, destructible by no known force on Earth. Indians may stand divided in terms of their affiliation to political parties and religions; but, Cricket has been, and will continue to be, the sole knitting tool which has held. and which will continue to hold, the multi-colored myriad yarns of the Indian societal fabric together, for everyone to behold a colorful and strong flag of love, fluttering high in the skies of time..!
Jai Ho Cricket..!!
Jai Ho India..!!
